hmm... can't remember whether or not there was this strong smell of bay - I pulled about 1000 woody weeds that day of which approx 30 were young bay plants.
Well bay is not usually red stemmed, at least my plant isn't. Assuming it is a photinia I keyed it to Photinia ×fraseri in Key Base for Hort Flora. There are several Photinia options, it seems. So if you find more like this we should try to id carefully. Photinia ×fraseri is another name for P. robusta which is what MichaelMulvaney suggested for the other similar plant in Photinia robusta (Red Leaf Photinia)
